Take A Deep Nasal Breath

Breathe With Your Nose

This tool serves many purposes. Maybe you're a bit tense or down at the start of your day. Relax. When the weather is hot/humid. There's less air so it's hard to breathe well passively. And if you're sitting or standing with bad posture right now, then your nasal pathways are closed.

So to fix all those, take a deep nasal breath. This works like a drug. Here's what Huberman said about nose breathing.

  1. It warms and moisturizes the air that you bring into your lungs, which is more favorable for lung health than breathing through the mouth.
  2. The increased resistance through the nose allows you to inflate your lungs more.
  3. The gas nitric oxide is created in the nasal passages. It's a gas that can cause relaxation of the smooth muscles that relate to the vasculature not just of your nose but of your brain and all the tissues of your body.

So nose air quality > mouth air quality. When you're short of breath, don't try to gasp for more mouth breaths. Instead, switch to your nose. (Unless you really can't breathe).

And this good breathing helps you get over other tough situations. Like when you

  • Lack motivation
  • Need to focus
  • Feel sad
  • Get anxious
  • Or can't think clearly

But this needs to be active. You need to actively bring your attention to nasal breathing.

For today, catch every mouth breath you make and switch it to a slow, deep nasal one.

If you have closed nasal pathways. Here's the treatment. Right now, take shallow nasal breaths for 60 seconds. This opens the nasal pathways for a few hours.

So do this for a minute right now. Take your hand off the phone, keyboard, or mouse, and actively breathe through your nose for 60 seconds.
